n / n – nest

  • Voiced. This sound is made with your vocal cords.
  • Place the tip of your tongue on the roof of your mouth, just behind your upper front teeth.
  • Your lips and teeth should be slightly apart.
  • When making the /n/ sound, some people sound like they are making the /m/ sound. To avoid this problem, make sure that your lips stay slightly parted.
  • Both the /m/ and /n/ sounds are nasal sounds, but /m/ comes more from the lips when they are pressed together (you can feel a vibration in your lips). The /n/ sound comes more from the nose.
  • Place a finger on the bridge of your nose when making this sound to ensure that the sound is coming from the nose area (see photo).
