zh / ʒ – television

  • Voiced. This sound is made with your vocal cords.
  • Your lips must be slightly parted.
  • Your front teeth should be very close together but slightly parted.
  • The sides of the middle part of your tongue touch the upper side teeth (see photo).
  • There is a passage down the center of your tongue for the air to flow out of your mouth and make the sound.
  • The front part of your tongue should be in the middle of your mouth but not touching anything.
  • Curl the tip of your tongue.
  • The tongue will vibrate slightly when making this sound.
  • Tip: The tongue position for /zh/ is very similar to the tongue position for the /sh/ sound. /zh/ is the voiced version and /sh/ is the unvoiced version. Also, with the /zh/ sound, the tip of the tongue gets curled back a little more.
  • Similar sound: /sh/, /j/, /ch/
