er / ɝ – bird

  • Voiced. This sound is made with your vocal cords.
  • This sound is almost identical to the /r/ sound. The only difference is a very short vowel sound at the beginning.
  • Like the /r/ sound, the corners of your mouth are pulled in a bit to give your lips a slightly rounded feeling.
  • Your tongue rises in your mouth so that the sides of the middle part of your tongue touch your upper side teeth.
  • The front part of the tongue should be in the middle of the mouth but not touching anything.
  • Curl the tip of the tongue backwards towards the back of the mouth as you make the sound.
