ēr / ir – deer

  • Voiced. This sound is made with your vocal cords.
  • To make this sound, we need to combine two other sounds: the first is the ‘long e’ /ē/ sound and the second is the /r/ sound.
  • Start by making the ‘long e’ /ē/ sound: lips and teeth are slightly apart; corners of your lips are pulled back like when smiling; tongue is high in your mouth with the sides touching the upper teeth; tip of your tongue is touching your bottom front teeth.
  • From here, the mouth moves to the /r/ position.
  • Your lips move into a slightly rounded position.
  • The tip of your tongue curls back in the middle of your mouth.
