ow / aw – cow

  • Voiced. This sound is made with your vocal cords.
  • To make this sound, we need to combine two other sounds: the first is the ‘short o’ /ŏ/ sound and the second is the /w/ sound.
  • Start by dropping your jaw and opening your mouth to produce the ‘short o’ /ŏ/ sound. With the /ow/ sound, your mouth should feel a little wider than it does with the ‘short o’ /ŏ/ sound.
  • From here, the mouth moves to the /w/ position.
  • Your jaw closes as you make a tight circle with your lips pushed out away from your face like when you give someone a kiss (see photo).
  • Throughout this sound, your tongue will remain flat at the bottom of your mouth; the tip of your tongue touches your lower front teeth.
