au / ɔ – saw

  • Voiced. This sound is made with your vocal cords.
  • To make this sound, the jaw drops like it does when making the ‘short o’ /ŏ/ sound.
  • With the /au/ sound, the corners of the lips are pulled in a bit and the lips become a bit rounded.
  • Your tongue rises a little in your mouth but the tip of your tongue stays down, lightly touching your bottom front teeth.
  • Note: when you make this sound, your cheeks will pinch in a little (see photo).
